in every battle, find the win
It’s counterintuitive to how our brains work. Usually all we can focus on is everything that went wrong. But what if you flipped the script and chose to focus on what went right? Think about how that could change your mindset with every battle you face.
A few weeks ago, I ran with a new friend and fellow run club member in a training run for an upcoming race. During our run, we were both struggling in sweltering heat. I REALLY didn’t feel like running, but she had the face of determination so I decided to keep going.
I shared with her the concept of finding the win in every run: No matter how much you struggle, you can dig deep to find the one thing that you can be proud of.
As we turned the corner and faced a steep hill, I said, “Let’s run the hill and then we can walk at the top.” I was saying it as much for myself as I was for her. Despite having lived in Tennessee for 18 months, this Alabama girl still struggles with hills. When we reached the top, we both looked at each other — breathless — and knew that conquering that hill was the win.
No matter what you face, choose to find the win — even if it’s an uphill battle. But the thing is, you have to CHOOSE to look for it. Remember, it’s the opposite of how your brain normally works, so it will take some practice.
But don’t just acknowledge it and move on. Keep track of your wins. Write them down in a journal or in the notes app on your phone. And when you feel like you’re struggling? Go back and read all the ways you have won to remind yourself just how amazing you are.
